A delicious, oozing toasted cheese sandwich is a British favourite – the ultimate comfort food which can be enjoyed at any time of the day, at home or on the go.
This National Cheese Toastie Day (27 October), we are sharing some of the top tips we’ve learned from developing products for the food service and food manufacturing industry, to uplevel this cheesy delight into something extra special.
Switching to a finer grate of cheese for your toastie means the cheese will melt faster, so whether you are cooking your toasted sandwich under the grill, in a pan or the toastie maker you are guaranteed gooey cheesy goodness.
If you want to jazz up your toastie, why not add a flavoured cheddar in place of your usual cheese? Smoked cheese blends are trending among our food service and retail customers for hot food products including toasted sandwiches.
Stretch it out
Lots of people love the stretch you get with mozzarella in a cheese toastie, but as a mild cheese it’s not always packed with flavour. Instead, try a mozzarella blend which is mixed with a more flavoursome cheese, such as Emmental or a mature cheddar, for the best of both worlds – stretch and taste.
Research says that 3.3 million people eat a cheese toastie every day and 31.3 million eat them at least once a week! That’s a lot of cheese. If you are worried about the impact of all that cheese on your waistline, swap for a reduced-fat cheese or even mozzarella which has a lower fat content than cheddar.
Let’s be honest, the melting cheese is arguably the star of any cheese toastie. Getting the melting point of the cheese to match the optimum browning of the bread is an art, but with a functional cheese like one of our mozzarella alternatives you can choose the exact melting point and stretch quality you want for the perfect toasted cheese sandwich every time. Heaven!
